Elephant Seals, Cambria, California

We welcomed the new year in beautiful Cambria, California. There is always plenty to do in Cambira; see Hearst Castle, wine tasting through Paso Robles, visit Piedras Blancas Lighthouse or walk along Moonstone beach.

Having a limited time after visiting the downtown area to look through the art galleries, we decided that we should go and see the Elephant Seals as they were calving. Following a trip just north of Hearst Castle to see the elephant seals we stopped to photograph the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse as the sun slipped over the horizon and night set in, and the new year storm took hold.

The last Moonrise of 2009

The last moonrise of 2009 was a blue moon, the moon came over the horizon just as the sun went down. It seemed so big as it came over the horizon that it would be possible to touch it or at least lasso it as in the ferry tails. Though the moon wasn’t it’s closest to earth it was quite a site to. I took the photograph seen here in two photographs, one to correctly expose the moon and the other to correctly expose the tree seen in front of it.

As a note have your camera ready on Jan. 30, 2009 as we again have a minimum distance to the moon according to this website, also for those close to the ocean/beach at this date the tides will be at their peak for the year.
