Planting berries in the rich soil of the Central Valley was once an impossibility with the oppressive summer heat quickly bearing down on the valley each summer. However advancement in horticultural practices have yielded berry varieties that with some care can be grown in the early spring through the start of the hot summer months of the year. While the heat of the summer days allows sugar full berries it can often ruin them before they are picked, packed and shipped. Just up the street from where I live is one of the best places in California’s Central Valley to find fresh berries come late spring and early summer. Owned by Paul and Gayle Willem’s.
